Mother & Daughter
Date Rape Prevention Testimonial

I was raped when I was 16. I raised my daughter, Amanda, to be very different from me. I was a very compliant child and very docile. I often got myself into situations where I wasn't quite comfortable. I didn't know what was going on (fortunately bad things hadn't happened too early) ... as I continued to listen to my parents and people tell me that I was over-reacting. They said that I worried about things that weren't necessary to worry about. Eventually, however, when I was 16, I got myself into a situation where I was raped ... it was a date rape ... raped and beaten badly.

If I had listened to the Yello Dyno album (when I was younger), I would have never gotten myself into that situation because I would have been much more aware of my surroundings ... my environment ... and looking ahead about what I might be getting into. Plus, I think I would have had the power to just say NO ... and in a fashion that it would have gotten more attention, or more respect. Perhaps I would have got raped anyway ... but I don't think I would have been in that position to begin with. I wouldn't have been in that place alone at that time.

My daughter, Amanda, has taken it (the cause) up herself. Now that she has seen Yello Dyno's video, Tricky People and listened to the CD, Can't Fool Me!, she knows the songs by heart ... after just listening to the CD everything is recorded in her mind. She pops up and sings the song at what I consider to be really odd times ... but then I look around and realize that she's a lot more in tune with the surroundings than I am and she is reacting to someting that I should be reacting to. She's a good little "detector" to have with me ... because she has much purer instincts than I do and I don't think that she'll be in the same position (that I was at 16).

I pray that she won't be raped as a teenager, like so many girls are, because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time ... just because they don't have the education to avoid situations that are dangerous to them. Amanda calls it like she sees it. She's got a good head on her shoulders and I really believe it's because she's paid such good attention to Yello Dyno that she doesn't get herself into those circumstances. Kids do call it like they see it and Yello Dyno says "Hey, you can say it like you see it." And now I'm am looking at what Amanda is looking at and I'm seeing it, too. We are learning it together.
