Family Violence
Statistics Approximately 90% of children are aware of
the violence directed at their mothers. Child abuse is 15 times more likely to occur
in families where domestic violence is present. Children living with family violence use hitting
as their initial method to solve problems. As children mature in homes where family violence
is occurring, sympathy toward the mother is often replaced by overt
hostility. Regardless of their age, children living with
domestic violence tend to have higher risks of alcoholic / drug abuse
and juvenile delinquency. Boys who witness violence learn that violence
is an appropriate way of resolving conflict. Boys from violent homes
may become disruptive, act aggressively toward objects and people,
and may throw severe temper tantrums. Girls may learn that victimization is inevitable.
May become withdrawn, passive, clinging, and dependent. A child's brain development may be negatively
affected; nervousness, anxiety, shorter attention span, hyperactivity.
